López-Villaseñor Municipal Museum
This museum is home to the works of Ciudad Real painter Manuel López Villaseñor, one of the best examples of Spanish painting from the second half of the 20th century. In its thirteen rooms, visitors can admire how the painter’s works transition from his academicist beginnings, his process of transformation moving towards critical realism combined with a certain component of expressionism in his themes, and eventually achieving the intellectual beauty of his last still-lives. In addition, this museum hosts different temporary exhibitions throughout the year.
It is located in an ancestral Manchegan home built at the beginning of the 15th century, one of the oldest of its kind conserved in the city. In 1451, it was the birthplace of Hernán Pérez del Pulgar, known as “The One of the Valiant Deeds,” a captain of the Castilian Army serving the Catholic Monarchs.
A remarkable aspect is its Renaissance façade, the body of which is central in a tower-like fashion, and which is decorated with two Ionic granite columns, a wrought iron balcony (where Hernán Pérez del Pulgar’s room was located) and the family coat of arms. The bottom floor, like an entranceway for carriages, provides access to a Castilian porticoed patio with stone columns, wood galleries and a well in the middle.
